THE GENERAL’S FIRST NIGHT

By nightfall, the maps were covered in red markings, the flour reserves were under siege, and one of our finest pieces of heavy machinery had been lost in action.

General Jakub Marek Brzęczyszczykiewicz-Szczęśniewski — Generał Chrząszcz to the men, and to anyone who values their remaining breath — finally withdrew to his command tent.

General Chrząszcz exhausted in his command tent, holding a glass of rum
General Headquarters, after sunset. The briefing has been postponed until the rum runs out.

The Allies have pledged support. The Moth Kingdom remains entrenched. The red KitchenAid will knead no more.

With the day’s casualty reports stacked beside him, the General inspected the bottom of a glass of rum. Intelligence suggested it was safe to proceed with a second inspection.

Evening situation report

  • Enemy forces: Still at large
  • Allied reinforcements: Announced; operational coordination questionable
  • Heavy equipment: One red KitchenAid out of action
  • General’s morale: Classified
  • Rum reserves: Under active reassessment

We shall fight them in the cupboards. We shall fight them in the drawers. But not tonight.

Tomorrow, the campaign resumes. Tonight, even the General has earned the right to sit down.
